Ingredients
Scale
2 1/4 tsp dry active yeast
1 1/4 cups warm water, divided
4 1/4 cups flour
2 tbsp butter, softened
2 tbsp sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
3 tbsp butter, melted
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp oregano
Instructions
In a bowl, place 1/4 cup warm water and sprinkle yeast on top. Stir and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
In a mixer, combine sugar, butter, salt, and 4 cups flour. Add yeast mixture and remaining water. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
Add additional flour (1/4 cup or more) and continue mixing until a soft, smooth dough forms.
Place the dough on a floured surface and divide it into two one-foot-long logs.
Cut each log into 8 even pieces and roll each into a 7-inch-long breadstick (16 total).
Place breadsticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them 1-1 1/2 inches apart. Cover with a cloth and let rise for 45 minutes.
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
Brush breadsticks with half of the topping mixture before baking.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until lightly golden brown.
After removing from the oven, brush with the remaining butter mixture.
Notes
The recipe makes about 16 breadsticks. If you need fewer, halve the recipe for 8 breadsticks.
To make these extra quick and easy, use frozen bread dough. One loaf makes 8 breadsticks. Frozen rolls can also be used, forming one breadstick per roll.
