Ingredients

Scale

Fresh fish fillets (such as catfish, tilapia, flounder, or red snapper)

1 cup buttermilk

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup cornmeal

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, pour buttermilk and place the fish fillets in the buttermilk to soak for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large skillet to a temperature of 350°F (175°C).
  4. Take each fish fillet out of the buttermilk and coat it generously with the flour mixture, pressing the coating firmly onto the fish.
  5. Gently place the coated fish fillets into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 4-6 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  6. Once cooked, remove the fish from the oil and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  7. Serve the crispy Southern fried fish hot with tartar sauce, lemon slices, and your favorite sides.

Notes

You can adjust the level of spiciness by increasing or decreasing the amount of cayenne pepper.

Make sure to maintain the oil temperature throughout the frying process to achieve a crispy crust.

Serve the fried fish immediately to enjoy the best texture and flavor.
