  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground cardamom (optional)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup plain yogurt or sour cream
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9-inch round or square baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples; set aside.
  3. In one bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cardamom. In another bowl, combine melted butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and yogurt until smooth.
  4. Gradually mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until just combined.
  5. Spread half the batter in the pan and layer half the apple slices on top. Repeat with remaining batter and apples.
  6. Sprinkle a mixture of sugar and cinnamon over the top.
  7. Bake for 40–45 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool before serving.
